In part one, we’ll walk you through the process of importing shoes from an external source directly into 3D fashion design software, VStitcher, and how to adjust them so they fit perfectly on your avatar’s feet. For part two, we’ll demonstrate how to import a 3D handbag into VStitcher, edit its fabric’s color and texture according to your preferences, and adjust the avatar to hold the bag in a natural pose.

Remember, there are limitless possibilities when designing accessories in 3D, and we hope you’ll continue to explore.

Shoe Creation

When adding a pair of shoes to your avatar, you can start by importing the 3D shoe model, which can be purchased or downloaded for free on different websites. There is also an option for you can find an external 3D apparel designer to create custom-made shoes. Once your 3D shoe model is ready, you can open it up directly into 3D fashion design software, VStitcher.

Where can I find my 3D shoe model in VStitcher?

Go to the Resources tab, click 3D and go to ‘Closet.’  Select ‘Shoes’ from the drop-down list if it’s not already in use. Then proceed to click the hamburger icon, select ‘Add Shoes,’ move to the location of the shoe file and finally select it.

Tips to keep in mind when importing a 3D shoe model into a fashion design software like VStitcher:

  • You can import the 3D model as an FBX or OBJ file format.
  • There must only be one shoe, not a pair, in your 3D object, as the shoe will be mirrored on the avatar.
  • The file can contain multiple objects and textures however the mesh shouldn’t have more than 20,000 polygons.
  • When preparing the 3D object in external software to import shoes with the correct orientation, ensure that the shoes’ tops are parallel to the Y-axis.
  • Before importing the object to VStitcher, preparing the external assets in the same size as their real-life size is recommended.

How to import high heels into VStitcher?

Note that when it comes to importing high-heel shoes into VStitcher, you’ll have to edit the height of the avatar’s heels in the ‘Context View’ under ‘Measurements.’  Also, the high heels slider goes from 0 to 1, allowing you to fit many different styles of shoes.

Handbag Creation

When adding a handbag to complete your look, you will need a 3D model of a handbag, which can be purchased or downloaded for free on different websites focusing on 3D models.  Another option is to reach out to a 3D apparel designer who can create a custom-made handbag. Once you have your 3D model of a handbag, you can open it directly into 3D fashion design software, VStitcher.

Tips to keep in mind when importing a 3D handbag model into VStitcher:

  • The file can contain multiple objects and textures and should be in an FBX or OBJ format.
  • Before importing the 3D trims into VStitcher, preparing the external assets in the same size as their real-life size is recommended.
  • Note that under the 3D trim Geometry, you can change the object’s size.
  • Be aware that piece-assignable trims cannot stand alone, so you must assign the handbag to a pattern piece. To do this, you can create a rectangular pattern piece, stitch it together, and arrange and dress it on the avatar. This isolated armband will serve as an attachment for the handbag.
  • Only add the 3D trim after the whole outfit is simulated, as this avoids any collision between the handbag and the outfit.

Side note: When using the ‘Styling Tool’ to move the handbag into your desired location, just a small tip, use the 3D gizmo tool for better orientation in the 3D window. Once that is done, you can adjust the intensity of the texture maps to enhance the final look of the handbag and can recolor the handbag.
